USES:
This compound is used as a porcelain glaze, as a fertilizer
additive and as a catalyst. It is used in paints, varnishes,
textile dyes, fungicides, medicines and ceramics. In foods,
it is used as a nutrient and dietary supplement. It is also
used in ore flotation, as a catalyst in viscose process and
in synthetic manganese dioxide. In veterinary medicine, it
is used as a nutritional factor (essential trace element in
all animals) and in the prevention of perosis in poultry.
Manganese is an essential element for animals and plants. The
forms of manganese most commonly used in animal feed are manganous
oxide and manganese sulfate monohydrate. When water solubility
is necessary, manganese sulfate is preferred. Manganese dioxide
is not considered biologically available to the animal. The
manganese requirements vary considerably between species.
Manganese is a functional component of many enzyme systems,
including those involved with carbohydrate, protein and lipid
metabolism. In addition, manganese is a component of the matrix
of bone and essential for reproductive function. Manganese
is necessary for utilization of biotin, vitamin B1 and vitamin
C.
Typical Deficiency Symptoms of Manganese in Animals
