Use Methods of HY Series Organic Bentonite

HY series organic bentonite is a kind of lamellar-structure product. The lamellar structure must be dispersed so as to make the organic bentonite function. Generally, this needs high-speed dispersing or high-shearing grinding.
It can be directly added to solvent-based paints or used as pre-gel. It functions better when used as pre-gel.

Addition methods of pre-gel:

For poor-wettability resin system (such as epoxy, polyester, short oil alkyd resin, etc),it is better to use HY series organic bentonite as pre-gel.
(1)composition of pre-gef: 87% solvent, 8-10%organic bentonite, 3-4% polar activator.
(2) preparation process of pre-gel: add organic bentonite into solvent (mixing and stirring for 10 minutes for full wetting), and then add polar activator (stirring for 5 minutes for full intumescing).

Dispersion speed:
Regardless of the addition methods, bentonite products must be thoroughly dispersed and form a kind of pre-gel. Then, they have the properties of bentonite, such as thixotropy, anti-sediment and thickening.
The dispersion needs additional high-shearing force. It is necessary to use the following equipments: high-speed disperser, triple-roller mill, colloid mill, sand grinder or ball-milling. If the shearing force or activation energy is strong, it is easy to get the gel. The performance of organic bentanite increases with the increase of the dispersion machine's line speed.

Dispersion temperature

Increasing temperature( another activation energy) can also improve the gelation. If other conditions are the same, the viscosity of pre-gel made in cold solvent system }0°C-50°C} is lower than that made in high-temperature solvent system. But the dispersion temperature should not exceed the boiling point of the activation solvent.
Activator
Polar additives can help the layer-slice bentanite easily farm slice-layer structure and then form thixatropic gel. Generally, the dosage of polar additives( such as ethanol, methanol,acetone, propylene carbonate} is 30-50% of the organic bentonite.
Moisture content
To form grid structure pre-gel, organic bentonite must contain enough moisture. Water molecule is the bridge of the grid structure, so organic bentonite should not be too dry and generally the proper moisture content is about 3.5%.Polar additives should not be waterless (95% polar activator and 5% water is proper).
