At the recent World Adhesive Conference and Expo in Miami in April, David Nick, president of DPNA International presented a paper containing his forecasts for the adhesives and sealants markets through 2010. He forecasts that the industry will achieve sales of $13.33 billion at that time based on a volume of 8.92 billion pounds of which $11.30 billion will be in adhesives and $2.03 will be sealants.
He estimated that the adhesives segment of the A&S industry had sales of $9.50 billion in 2007 while the volume of adhesives totaled 6.6 billion pounds. He forecast that adhesive sales will increase by 6 percent per year through 2010 reaching a total of $11.30 billion. Volume growth will however only be 3.0 percent per year as prices continue to outpace volume growth to reach a total 7.21 billion pounds. Growth of adhesives will be led by products for paper and paperboard which will experience growth of 3.8 percent per year. Other growth areas include adhesives for assembly, woodworking and transportation.
Sales of sealant products amounted to $1.80 billion in 2007 with volume of 660 million pounds. Silicones and urethanes are by far the leading sealant products followed by latex and butyl rubber. Sealant growth is forecast at 4.2 percent in dollars to reach $2.02 billion in 2010 with volume growth forecast at 2.6 percent per year to reach a total of 715 million pounds. Despite the current slowdown in housing, non residential construction will spur growth in the short term followed by transportation consumer goods and assembly operations. Sealants are expected to have an increasingly more important role in noise control, vibration and harshness applications.
