Sodium Chlorate
The molecular formula and molecular weight of sodium chlorate are NaClO3 and 106.44 respectively. Usually it is white or slightly yellow cubic crystal, while the metastable form is rhombic crystal. It is cool and salty tasting, readily soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol. In acidic solution, it is strongly oxidative. It dissociates and releases oxygen when the temperature exceeds 300°C. Sodium chlorate is unstable, and is inflammable and explosive under impact when mixed with phosphorus, sulfa or organic substances. Easily aggregates by absorbing moisture. Toxic.
Applications: mainly used in industries such as paper, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, chemicals, water purification, porcelain enamel and perchlorates.
Packing: 25 kg or 50 kg in polyethylene bag contained in polypropylene woven bag; or 50 kg in iron drum.
Precautions in Transport and Storage: Sodium chlorate, a white to light yellow crystal or powder, is an active inorganic oxidant. It dissociates and releases oxygen when heated. When mixed with the following substances, there is the possibility of explosion:
1. Organic substances, such as oil and grease, asphalt, flour, wood chips, powdery coal, carbon powder, organic solvents and others.
2. Powdery metal, such as magnesium powder, aluminum powder, iron powder and zinc powder.
3. Concentrated sulfuric acid.
4. Reductive substances, such as sulfa and phosphorus. The product produces toxic gas when mixed with acid. The product shall never be stored or transported with the above mentioned substances. It should be handled with care, and shall never be dragged to keep the packing intact and clean. When ignited, water can be used to extinguish the fire.
