WATER HOLDING CAPACITY
The extreme high capacity of water holding is the basis of Hyaluronic Acid being used for the water holding of cosmetic products. Some data might explain this capacity of Hyaluronic Acid. The high molecule weight of Hyaluronic Acid can bind water of 1000 times weight. Hyaluronic Acid not only can bind water, but also its net structure may retain water from flowing and volatilization.
WATER RETENTION
The moisture evaporation rate constant of Hyaluronic Acid is less than that of other moisturizers such as Glycerin, Sorbitol, and Pyrrolidone Carboxylate. The capacity of water retention is one of the most important biological functions which the Hyaluronic Acid contains in skin and other tissues. The striking capacity of water retention makes Hyaluronic Acid keep the skin smooth and tender, wet and exquisite, and full of elasticity.

VISCOSITY AUGMENTATION
With high viscosity, the water solution of Hyaluronic Acid at concentration of 1% comes out to be gel. When added to the cosmetic products, Hyaluronic Acid can take the function of viscosity augmentation and stabilization.
FEATURE OF ANTI-AGING
The content of Hyaluronic Acid contained in human skin decrease with aging, which causes loss of the water in skin tissues and shrink of the matrix beyond the cells. As a result, the skin becomes dry and coarse, and wrinkles arise. The personal care products containing Hyaluronic Acid can improve the water retention capacity of the skin, let the skin regain its elasticity, and reduce the appeared wrinkles.
WATER UPTAKE
Compared to other water preservation agents, Hyaluronic Acid has highest water absorbing capacity under the low relative humidity(33%), and has the lowest water absorbing capacity under the high relative humidity(75%). Hyaluronic Acid can hold the relative stabilized moisture under an environment with somewhat rapid change of the humidity.
NATURE OF LUBRICATION
Besides, Hyaluronic Acid has fine filming nature and high capacity of lubrication. The electronegative hydroxypropyl of Hyaluronic Acid and the electropositive matrix upon the film has strong appetency. They will form a layer of biological film upon the mucous membrane to undertake the task of protection and lubrication. Hyaluronic Acid has low skin slip resistance, which may lubricate the skin well. (See the figure below)
