It is white needle-like or slight yellow green needle-like, flaky crystal or crystalline powder; Bitter, it is soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone and propylene glycol, is insoluble in water practically. It is stable matter in dry condition. The ph value of 2.5% solution is 4.5--7.5. It is stable in weak acidic and neutral solution. It is not decomposed in the boiling water. It may be invalid in basic condition. Melting point is 149-153 Celsius degree. Chloramphenicol is one kind of broad spectrum antibiotic. It can be used in the infection of typhoid bacillus, shigella dysenteiae, colibacillus, flu bacillus, brucella abortus, pneumococus. It is the best drug of typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever. For external use, it can cure trachoma, acne, bottle nose and seborrheic dermatitis. It also can be used in the cure of bacterial meningitis and brain abscess.
