Andrographolide is the main active ingredient of Andrographis Paniculata (Burm.f) Ness, capable to dispel heat, detoxicate, diminish inflammation and relieve pain, with special curative effect to bacillary or viral upper respiratory tract infection and dysentery. It is praised as natural antibiotic. For it is diterpene lactone compound and hardly soluble in water, thus it can only be taken orally in general. According to the clinical demands to treat acute viral infections, different hydrophilic groups can be introduced into its lactone structure to heighten its water-solubility and improve its curative effect. Many kinds of andrographolide injections have been developed including Chuanhuning Injection and Lianbizhi Injection as representatives, which have been listed as absolutely necessary drugs in emergency departments by Ministry of Health of the PRC and State Administration of Traiditional Chinese Medicine of the PRC. These injections can kill bacteria, dispel heat, diminish inflammation, and strengthen the function of adrenal cortex.
