Manganese-silicon is an alloy of manganese, silicon, iron and other elements, is the second biggest consumed product among electric cooker ferroalloys. Manganese and silicon are highly affinitive to oxygen and produce MnSiO with the melting point of 1270°C and 1327°C respectively, In their sold application, the ignition losses are 46% and 37%, but the ignition loss of manganese-silicon are 29% only. Therefore, it is widely used in the production of steel for its oxides are low melting point, easy-to-floatation, and large granules. Now, manganese-silicon is an essential compound deoxidizer and alloy introducer; moreover, manganese-silicon containing 1.9% or less of carbon is the semi-product of low carbon ferromanganese and metal manganese in electro-silicothermic process.
Manganese-silicon can be used in continuous smelting process in large/medium/small-scale mineral arc furnace; self-used manganese-silicon is made in the same method of commercial manganese-silicon except is being smelted in bottom casting method. In addition, high silicon manganese-silicon is made in the same method of common manganese-silicon except the ferric assay should be restrained strictly.
