Scale and Fouling Inhibitors
For Reverse Osmosis
C hemical
fouling, typically due to carbonate, sulphate, silica, Iron, occurs as a
result of the concentration of dissolved inorganic salts at the membrane
surface, as pure water flows through the membrane, if the ionic product of a
dissolved salt exceeds its solubility product then precipitation can occur,
leading to fouling of the membrane surface.
Historically,
mineral acids and polyphosphate were used to control deposition in both
brackish water and seawater operations, but neither were satisfactory in all
conditions. Mineral acids can present serious supply problems and safety
hazards to plant operators. The use of acid also requires accurate dosing and
control if scaling and corrosion problems are to be minimized. Sulphuric acid
can also contribute to sulphate scaling problems. Polyphosphate is not
considered to be completely effective against sulphate deposition.
