| The incidence of Lanolin allergy amongst the general population has long been debated and is still a topic for many discussions between dermatologists and skin specialists. These debates and arguments related to the supposed skin sensitizing properties of lanolin should be judged in comparison to the amount of lanolin and lanolin derivatives currently sold throughout the world. It is estimated that more than sixty million ( 60,000,000.00 ) kilograms of lanolin and it's derivatives are sold every year. Add to this that they are used in very small quantities in most formulations and the evidence would point to the fact that lanolin should be considered as a very marginal skin sensitizer when compared to most other clinical medicines or cosmetic additives.
One large epidemiological study conducted in 1975 concluded that the frequency of lanolin allergy was no more than 5- 6 people in one million.
It should also be remembered that if manufacturers of pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications containing lanolin were overwhelmed with complaints relating to skin sensitivity, then it would be quickly removed. This has never been the case and reports of complaints are virtually non existent, so it would seem that lanolin being unsurpassed as a skin softener and moisturizer is not likely to be a skin sensitizer.
