DERMATOLOGY / EMOLLIENCE
Lanolin has a reputation as being the premier emollient for use in skin care applications and preparations. Emollience is defined as a smoothing and softening of the stratum corneum due to increased water content. The term emollient is synonymous with moisturizing, and effects an improvement of rough or dry skin that is caused by lack of sufficient natural moisture retention. The occlusive nature of lanolin provides a mechanism for water to be retained in the stratum corneum and imparts a smooth film on rough or flaky skin surfaces, thus retarding trans-epidermal moisture loss. Subsequent re-hydration of the stratum corneum leads to increased flexibility and softening of the skin with reductions in both inflammation and skin redness.
