| Lanolin is a complex mixture of esters and polyesters of high molecular weight alcohols ( from C12 ¨C C36 ) , and fatty acids ( from C7 ¨C C41 ).
It also contains approximately 6 - 7% of naturally occurring free lanolin alcohols plus lesser traces of free acids and hydrocarbons.
Separation of the various alcohols and acids is achieved via a process utilizing alcohol / alkaline mixtures. The mixture is subjected to various processes yielding both the unsaponifiable fraction which contains the lanolin alcohols and the alkaline soaps that contain the fatty acids. The separation is typically 50% - 50% for each fraction, varying slightly with the type of solvent selected for the extraction process.
Lanolin Alcohols comprise three major chemical groups being:
Aliphatic Alcohols,
Sterols and
Tri Methyl Sterols.
Lanolin Acids comprise four major chemical groups being:
Normal Acids,
Iso Acids,
Antesio Acids and
Hydroxy Acids.
