Sheep are subjected to various climatic and environmental exposures and as such have to be protected from sheep scab, blow fly infestation and various other potentially serious or life threatening conditions. This is done by treating the sheep with various pesticides administered in the form of dipping, but being lipophilic in nature, these are readily absorbed and dissolved into the fleece of the sheep. Some traces of pesticides and herbicides remain in the wool- grease after the scouring process. References to lanolin purity are quite often misunderstood and confusion sometimes arises when purity is considered. The purity of different grades of lanolin should be judged by the measured traces of residual organochlorine and organophospherous pesticides, plus synthetic pyrethroids. Other pesticides, herbicides and trace contaminants may also be present as these are absorbed onto the fleece of the sheep from their natural environment. Traces of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons may also be found and are acquired from the general environment where they are known to be ubiquitous. Finally there may be traces of dissolved detergent residues in the wool grease emanating from the wool scouring process. All of these trace contaminants can now be eliminated during lanolin manufacture at Rossen, having been taken into consideration during the design phase of the processes.
