Acetylated Lanolin is produced by acetylating the free hydroxyl groups that are present in the free lanolin alcohols and esters of hydroxyl-carboxylic acids. In converting these alcohols and acids to acetates, the physical consistency of the lanolin changes very slightly and is shown in a reduced melting point with less tackiness being evident. The conversion to acyl esters makes the lanolin strongly lipophilic, with excellent solubility in mineral oil and which also enhances it's already very good properties of emolliency.
Main uses are obviously found in mineral oil based products such as bath oils, baby oils and sunscreen oils. It is also used as a wax substitute in many lip formulations and is suitable for many types of hair care preparations.
One effect of the acetylation is to reduce the water absorption capacity of the lanolin and this should be taken into consideration if required for any water in oil emulsion preparation. Reduced pesticide residues enhances its use for skin care applications. |
